From Katie, one of your co-founders:
When I graduate from medical school in 2014 I don’t know what field I’ll be going into, I don’t know at what hospital I’ll be starting my residency, and I don’t even know if I’ll be in the United States. There is one thing I do know about my future practice though and it’s that I will never write a prescription for oral contraceptives.
Oral contraceptives have been hailed as miracle drug that treats diseases like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, and other hormonal imbalances. I would like to clarify that statement though. Oral contraceptives treatment the symptoms of those diseases, they do not treat the diseases. In fact the excess hormones being delivered to an already off balance system will be converted to androgens, in a disease like PCOS this will only worsen the process.
The hormones in these contraceptives have more systemic effects than just on the reproductive system. The estrogen used causes a whole host of problems from strokes, hypertension (high blood pressure), hepatic adenomas (liver tumors), thromboembolisms (blood clots), and cancer. In fact the WHO has added estrogens and hormonal contraceptives to their list of Group 1 Carcinogens; the agent (mixture) is definitely carcinogenic to humans. Other substances that have found their way to this list are asbestos, arsenic, radiation, and mustard gas.
Because of estrogens carcinogenic nature and overall systemic effects, the companies who manufacture these drugs have lowered the doses of estrogen in their packages. . This means it does a worse job at suppressing ovulation. These breakthrough ovulations can occur (hence the failure rate) and be fertilized. That’s where hormonal contraceptives employ their second (abortifacient) defense against pregnancy. It thins the lining of the endometrium so that the newly fertilized embryo has a much more difficult time implanting. For those who believe, as I do, that life begins at conception this is a very early abortion.
I have decided that my practice will consist of practicing medicine where the goal is to cure the disease not solely manage the symptoms. Women deserve at least that much. I instead plan to utilize the Natural Procreative Technology studied by Dr. Hilgers to help women recognize the dignity of their femininity and help genuinely heal their ailments.
